A 60 pound lab lost its life and it’s carcass was found in the mountains after an attack. Many suspect missing dogs in the area are victims of lion attacks.
This is where the basset hound comes in.
Not long after the poor lab was killed and a 100 pound Rottie had to be saved by it’s owner, the mountain lion, believed to be the trouble maker, set her sites on a basset hound in Rapid City.
She studied the hound, plotted her strategy and attacked.
The result?
If you’re a basset hound lover, no need to turn away.
The basset hound went nuts. Started barking and carrying on and startled the mountain lion. When the lion hesitated, the basset charged.
The authorities found the lion in a nearby tree with the basset at the bottom looking up and growling.
Here’s what John Kanta, the regional game manager said.
“And that basset hound was so fat its belly drug on the ground,” he said. “It bayed and howled and put that lion right up a tree.”
That’s right, you don’t mess with a pissed off basset hound.
Big cat was undone by that arooooo attitude in action! 😉
Well done to your Basset for scaring off that horrid creature because I was really worried when I started reading the story!!! Please take care of your Basset because that could have been a very tragic story!!!
No hound will get harmed on this blog…ever!
Gog basset go! Oh, and BTW, I object to the casual slur on the basset’s appearance… their bellies are SUPPOSED to drag the ground! Right?
Absolutely right! Obviously the unenlightened…
Being owned by bassets myself, I find this story funny yet amazing. Bassets are very loyal and will fend for family. (especially where there is food to be had). “No Big Fat Rat Cat will get their food” 🙂
Right there with you Wanda!
Let’s hear it for the little guys! There was an article on the news about 5 months ago from California, when three Chihuahuas faced off against a mountain lion and held the big cat at bay.
Sometimes it the unexpected behavior that works on animals of prey. The Bassett didnt act like expected – the rott and the lab probably went all growling and fighting…the bassett talked it up a tree.
I once watched my three house cats corner a doberman…man that dog thought he found some chew toys – what he got was three cammando kitties working as a team.
Great story, and I love the picture!

YOU GO BIG LOVABLE Basset you!! Use that wonderful baritone bark to shake things up and defend yourself!
It deserves several treats from the owner when it looks up at them with those gorgeous, tear-jerker eyes 😉
Great story…love it, THANKS for sharing 🙂
