To order a Duffy book, click on one of the covers to the left.
Alright, he or she dumped you. You got nothing.
No prospects and nothing to look forward to.
Just memories that remind how much you lost and how little you got to look forward to.
But you got three things to help.
Your regular hangout (hopefully you didn’t bring him or her there and saved it as an oasis), alcohol and jukebox money.
Stare straight ahead, don’t talk to anyone, get a seat at the non-busy end of the bar, and commence with self-pity, self-loathing and the hopeless romanticism about how perfect the one who treated like shit was. Now, go to the jukebox and play these selections.
1. Indescribably Blue, Elvis Presley
2. Drive All Night, Bruce Springsteen
3. Permanently Lonely, Willie Nelson
4. Wurlitzer Prize, Waylon Jennings
5. Whiter Shade of Pale, Procol Harum (Yeah, I have no idea what the song’s about either but it makes me incredibly blue.)
6. I Will Always Love You, Whitney Houston
7. Running Scared, Roy Orbison
8. Send in the Clowns, Frank Sinatra
9. Romeo and Juliet, Dire Straits
10. I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, Tom Jones
I’m outta quarters. You got any? Whatcha gonna play?
“Send In the Clowns” will make you kill yourself if you’re really upset. I would also add “One for My Baby”.
“Melissa” by the Allman Brothers Band is pretty hard to listen to when you’re crying in your beer.
I love that you have Waylon Jennings listed! When I was a kid, everyone was listening to Yes, Genesis, and Led Zeppelin while I was saving my allowance to buy Waylon Jennings albums. Thanks, Tom!
Pasquale has it right, Sinatra’s “One for my Baby” is the ultimate. That whole album fits the bill.
I’d also add:
“Somebody’s Cryin'” by Chris Isaak
and to yin-out the yang:
“I Fall to Pieces” by Patsy Cline
“Sugar in My Bowl” by Nina Simone
“Goodmorning Heartache” by Billie Holiday
“Nothing Compares to You” by Sinead O’Connor
finally, if I was contemplating Drano shots and needed inspiration I’d add “Blue” by Joni Mitchell (Blue, here is a shell for you..)and the absolutely horrendous “Love is Blue” to put me over the edge.
Maria–the Waymore was definitely for you…Got to see him once–he was very cool…
“Nothing compares to you” Excellent choice!
Oh lord! Stop moping and get over it…a little “Bye Bye” fits the bill.
And I-I-I-I-I-I will always….
